The
author of this history was born in Portarlington of a long established
family, of several generations, whose forebears were vintners and merchants
at Bracklone. He is a retired E.S.B. Technical Officer and holds a M.I.E.T.
(London) qualification.
He joined Portarlington Golf Club in 1963.Interested in sport -and particularly in Physical Education from an early age, he was introduced to these subjects at the Army School of Physical Culture to which he was nominated to train by Portarlington Branch L.D.F. in 1945.He pursued the study of Physical Education and Athletic Training and gave freely of his services to the coaching of those disciplines through out his native county and beyond. He was among the award winners at the All-Ireland Physical Culture & Weight-lifting competitions held in Rathmines, Dublin, in 1949.At weight-lifting his best effort was 250 lbs. in the "Two Hands Clean &Jerk" Lift. He was Registrar and later Hon. Secretary /Treasurer to the Laois Co.Board N .A. & C.A. (1) for 12 years. He continued in that capacity on the formation of B.L.E. in 1967. He was appointed Eastern Region Coaching Organiser for that body in 1968 andwas their representative as "Field Judge" at many of their national athletic championships and international meetings.At the request of Laois County Board N.A. & C.A.(1) he compiled and published a history of athletics in Laois covering the period 1876 to 1956. He is married to Portarlington born Frances O'Keeffe and they have one daughter, Deirdre. |
